Fiverr (www.fiverr.com)
As a site that specialises in ‘Fiverr Clone Scripts’ you didn’t think we’d miss this one out did you? Fiverr has been leading the ‘microjob’ scene since it’s launch in 2010 and has revolutionised the world of freelance, with low cost but high quality ‘gigs’ starting from just $5. In this 10+ years since it’s foundation a lot has changed with the adoption of a wider market stance, allowing users to charge much more than $5 per job, positioning themselves as a freelance website to rival alternatives like UpWork.

As you can see from the homepage Fiverr no longer play on the whole “$5 per job” unique selling point, they are instead focusing on the wider freelance market. Big players are moving towards a generic approach to target a wider audience, but there may be opportunities arising for a niche experience. When looking to position your own freelancer website script, take a note of area’s you think they may be missing and make them targeting opportunities.
Inspiration points worth noting:
- Fiverr has moved towards the wider freelance market
- Gigs are no longer fixed at $5 (some are as high as $500+)
- Sellers are now internally verified for a higher price point

UpWork (www.upwork.com)
As Fiverr moves towards the wider freelance market, you can now see huge similarities to other key players in this space. One of these key players is UpWork, who were formerly known as ‘Elance O-Desk’ prior to re-branding in 2015 and have been growing ever since with an entrepreneurial approach. UpWork targets professional freelancers who are experts in their field, so demands a typically higher price point that sites like Fiverr (a point worth remembering).

Can you see the similarities in homepages here? Both are targeting a huge selection of services and are enticing you to find freelance work, but we get a more corporate feel from UpWork compared to Fiverr (and less personality). We get the vibe that UpWork is targeting ‘experts’ and ‘businesses’ where-as Fiverr is targeting a mixture of individuals, so there are clear differences in market positioning to take note of. As a freelancer website script, UpWork draws many similarities to the ‘GigToDo‘ theme we’ve previously reviewed.
Inspiration points worth noting:
- UpWork seems to target expert freelancers
- An entrepreneurial look and feel can be seen site-wide
- Jobs are matched to freelancers as if members of an agency

PeoplePerHour (www.peopleperhour.com)
PeoplePerHour is a growing freelance website who started off targeting the UK market, founded in 2007 as the new “one stop shop” for all freelance activity and now boasting over 4 million users. We consider PeoplePerHour to be a blend of both the Fiverr and UpWork approaches, with a huge variety of differing skill levels available (which also determine price). User coverage is worldwide, with most of the lower cost jobs being served by countries like India and Bangladesh.

The PeoplePerHour homepage bears a close resemblance to Fiverr, mixed in with a bit more of a professional focus. The ‘unique’ feature boasted here is that buyers post projects which can be bidded on by freelancers with the relevant certification or desired skill level, so the power is in the hands of the buyer. This is what has made it such a success on the buyer-front, so is a good point to note as a unique feature for your own freelance website script.
Inspiration points worth noting:
- A mixture of professional and individual user targeting
- Power is in the hands of the buyer with bid-able projects
- Price point can be determined by the buyer (fixed gigs available)
